Terms of Use

Last updated October 24, 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Thought Desk ("we") about using the Thought Desk app, thoughtdesk.org and the optional online features: accounts, friends and writing together. By using them, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use them.

The app and its code

Thought Desk is free to download. Its source code is published under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 (the AGPL). The AGPL, not these terms, governs copying, changing and sharing the code. These terms cover the services we run for you.

Your content

What you write in Thought Desk is yours, and we claim no rights to it. Your notes are stored on your computer, so keep your own backups of anything important.

When you write a page together with a friend, our relay passes the page between you while you write, and does nothing else with it. Afterwards, both of you keep a copy.

Accounts

Being fair to others

When you use friends and writing together, don't:

We may suspend or close accounts that do these things.

Paid plans

If we offer paid plans, Polar (polar.sh) sells them for us as the merchant of record, and Polar's terms also apply to your purchase. The price, what's included and whether it renews are shown before you pay. You can cancel a subscription at any time; it then ends at the end of the period you've paid for. Refunds are handled as described at checkout.

Online features may change

We'll do our best to keep accounts, friends and writing together running, but we may change, limit or stop them. If we stop a feature you've paid for, we'll refund the part you haven't used. The app and your notes keep working without them.

No warranty

Thought Desk is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We work hard to keep your notes safe, but we can't promise the app will be free of bugs or will never lose data.

Limits on our liability

To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for lost data, profits or opportunities, arising from your use of Thought Desk. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that can't be limited by agreement.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change matters, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. If you keep using Thought Desk after that, the new terms apply.
